Client Story

“Barbara” suffered the perfect financial storm and had no idea where to turn when the property manager at her apartment complex referred her to Dorcas Ministries. Barbara is a fast-food restaurant manager and mother of one. She has been living paycheck-to-paycheck for many years, always keeping her head just above water. Then, the worst happened. Her restaurant was sold to another restaurant group who then reset her leave to zero. Just a month later, she was involved in a serious car accident. With no accumulated leave, she had to go on leave-without-pay while she recovered from her injuries. Combined with large co-pays for the ambulance, hospital visit, and doctor’s office follow-ups, she was buried in added expenses. To make matters worse, when she filed the claim with insurance, she learned she was underwater on the loan and now owes the bank $2,000! Her rent was coming due and she had received a disconnect notice from Duke Energy. Thanks to a special provision in the Crisis Ministry policies for such cases we were able to pay her rent in full for a month after carefully checking all her supporting documents. We were also able to pay the past due amount on her Progress Energy bill, giving her the breathing room she needed to work on paying off her other debts. You’ve never seen a person filled with as much gratitude and humility. But best of all—she had hope. And there’s no price you can put on that.
